Louisiana Drug Detox Centers

Fifty Americans die each day from prescription drug overdoses, and more than 6 million suffer from prescription drug abuse. Fortunately, Louisiana is taking steps to help reduce these numbers by offering several drug detoxification centers.

Louisiana has the 19th highest drug mortality rate in the United States, with the number of drug overdose deaths tripling since 1999. The majority of these overdose deaths are caused by prescription drug abuse, including the abuse of commonly prescribed opioid painkillers such as OxyContin, according to a new report, Prescription Drug Abuse: Strategies to Stop the Epidemic.

Louisiana is taking important steps to stop the abuse of prescription drugs. Participation in the state’s prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) is mandatory for all prescribers. In an effort to crack down on “Doctor Shopping“, the state’s prohibits patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare provider. Louisiana also requires healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship before prescribing a controlled substance.

Under the state’s “pharmacy lock-in” program, individuals on Medicaid who are suspected of misusing controlled substances must used only one pharmacy to receive their prescriptions. These programs are an important first step towards curbing access to prescription painkillers and reducing the number of accidental overdose deaths occurring each year.
