Louisiana Dual Diagnosis Rehab Centers

Louisiana offers a variety of dual diagnosis treatment centers to help individuals manage their mental illness and overcome addiction.
Rates of Mental Illness in Louisiana
Since mental illness is so intertwined with drug and alcohol addiction, rates of mental illness within the state of Louisiana have a major impact on rates of addiction. Landing in the second highest tier for mental illness in the 2009 National Survey of Drug Use and Health, Louisiana has rates of serious mental illness slightly above average for the United States, but comes in right at average for overall rates of mental illness. That equates to nearly 20 percent of the population, with this breakdown, according to the 2011 “Mental Illness Surveillance” report by the CDC:
- Serious psychological distress: 5.3 percent of adults
- Postpartum depression/depressive symptoms: No exact number reported for the state of Louisiana, but postpartum depression rates are highest in African American women, and the population of African Americans in Louisiana is nearly two and a half times that of the U.S. population overall.
- Current depression: 9.3 percent (2009)
- Adults who received a diagnosis of depression in their lifetime: 12.4 (2008). Diagnosis for women in the U.S. is nearly twice that of men at 20.7 percent to men’s 11.2 percent. Rates of depression are highest among Caucasians at 17.3 percent, while African Americans come in at 12.3 percent and Hispanics at 12.8 percent.
