Delaware Drug Detox Centers

Despite being one of the smallest states, Delaware has the 10th highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States. Fortunately, there are a variety of drug detox centers available to help individuals safely stop the use of drugs and alcohol and find their path to sobriety.

According to a new report, Prescription Drug Abuse: Strategies to Stop the Epidemic, since 1999, the number of Delaware drug overdose deaths doubled. The majority of these overdose deaths are due to prescription drug abuse. In fact, nationwide, prescription drug overdose deaths now account for more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.

Delaware is proactively working to turn the tide against prescription drug abuse. The state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) is mandatory for prescribers. The state has passed new doctor shopping laws prohibiting patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare providers. Delaware also participated in Medicaid Expansion, which helps expand coverage of substance abuse services and treatment.

The state’s “Good Samaritan Law” provides a degree of immunity for individuals seeking to help individuals who are experiencing an overdose. As an additional measure to combat doctor shopping, Delaware also requires healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship before prescribing a controlled substance.
