Connecticut Drug Detox Centers

While Connecticut has the 13th lowest overdose rate in the United States, the number of drug-related overdose deaths increased by 12 percent since 1999. This increase is due primarily to the rise in prescription drug abuse, according to a new report, Prescription Drug Abuse: Strategies to Stop the Epidemic. In fact, prescription drug overdose deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined, and exceed the number of motor vehicle related deaths in 29 states and the District of Columbia. Unfortunately, despite recent efforts to expand access to prescription drug treatment centers, only one in 10 Americans with a substance abuse order are currently receiving treatment.

Efforts To Reduce Drug Abuse In Connecticut

Connecticut is actively working to address the prescription drug epidemic that is sweeping the United States. The state recently passed new regulations limiting prescription drug access and making it easier for individuals to receive treatment.

Connecticut has an active “Prescription Drug Monitoring Program” as well as doctor shopping laws that prohibit patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions when meeting with a healthcare provider. Connecticut also participated in Medicaid Expansion, which helps expand coverage of substance abuse services and treatment to the most vulnerable individuals.

The state’s “Good Samaritan Law” provides a degree of immunity for individuals seeking to help themselves or others who are experiencing an overdose. Connecticut has also passed a “Rescue Drug Law”, which expands access to the use of naloxone, a prescription drug that can help counteract an overdose.
