Women handle addiction differently than men because of how they are viewed by society and differing personality structures. Maryland has a variety of women-only rehab centers that are dedicated to treating the unique needs of women and getting them on the path to sobriety.

Whether it’s you, your mom, sister, wife, or female coworker- addiction to drugs or alcohol is very much a woman’s issue. Addiction can affect how a woman responds to treatment, as often times they internally bottle up their symptoms due to anxiety and shame.

In Maryland, nearly 50,000 patients were reported in rehab in 2013, according to a government survey. Of that number, women made up nearly 34 percent of those enrolled in treatment. One of the higher treatment areas for women was cocaine abuse at 44 percent. Additionally, pregnancy overdose deaths from drug or alcohol use more than tripled in Maryland in 2013 – with 14 deaths reported. Recognizing this problem, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene requires state-funded substance abuse programs to provide pregnant women with care within 24 hours of request.

No matter the circumstances surrounding your addiction, know that there is help for you too in Maryland. From women residential facilities to programs that offer specialty care to pregnant and postpartum mothers – treatment is readily available throughout the state.
