Teen Alcohol And Drug Rehab Centers In Ohio

There are an increasing number of addiction treatment centers across Ohio that are becoming specifically targeted to helping teens and adolescent patients.

Many people are under the impression that it’s only adults that can be challenged with issues involving drugs and alcohol. But in reality, these substances affect a much wider demographic of people, including teens and adolescents. In fact, teens and adolescents are oftentimes the most vulnerable when it comes to experimenting – and subsequently becoming dependent – on the likes of drugs and alcohol.

Take the Midwestern state of Ohio, for instance. According to data compiled by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), over 9,500 Ohio residents ages 12 to 17 used some kind of illicit drug in the past month. Furthermore, about 13,600 residents of the same age reported to having consumed alcohol in the past month. Obviously, not all who experience them become dependent on the various substances they try, but it’s worth noting that about 3,300 Ohio residents in the 12 to 17 year old range have been identified by SAMHSA as having abused or become dependent on alcohol in the last calendar year. About 3,900 residents of the same age were identified to have become dependent on illicit drug use within the past year.

It’s needless to say, but SAMHSA’s data identifies a problem with teen and adolescent dependence in Ohio. And as many as 3,600 that need treatment aren’t currently receiving it for illicit drug use, while another 3,100 that need it for alcohol issues aren’t getting the help that they need. That’s why adolescent treatment is so valuable.

Adolescent Treatment 101

Adolescent treatment programs are much like the treatment programs that are offered for adults that are battling substance abuse issues. They key difference, however, is that such programs are specifically targeted toward a younger age group. Unlike adults who are in rehab for substance abuse, teens are arguably more vulnerable at this state of their lives, as their brains are still developing and their comparatively smaller stature likely means that they have a much lower tolerance level when it comes to drugs and alcohol.

Noting this, adolescent treatment often involves a strong focus on doing well in school and on integrating family into overcoming substance abuse obstacles. What’s more is that many adolescents don’t enter rehab voluntarily, but because a parent or guardian has made the difficult decision for them – so this has to be taken into consideration when treating them too.
