Teen Alcohol And Drug Rehab Centers In California
Teens who abuse dangerous substances like drugs or alcohol face even more severe health consequences than adults because they are still growing and developing and these substances can interfere with that. California offers a variety of teen-specific rehab centers to ensure these individuals get the help they need to get back to a healthy life of sobriety.
It’s said that the most important step in an individual’s quest to overcoming challenges involving drugs or alcohol is to first admit that there’s a problem in the first place. And while many adults struggle with coming clean about their substance abuse issues, this is arguably the biggest area where teen/adolescent and adult substance abuse treatment differs.
Many adults willingly attend treatment of either the inpatient or outpatient variety. However, in the case of teens that are challenged with drugs or alcohol, they almost always enter treatment unwillingly – that is, a parent or guardian is making the ultimate decision for them do it.
Noting this, it becomes important to know the treatment that works best for helping a youngster overcome their substance abuse issues. After all, teen and adolescent substance abuse is a nationwide problem, and the state of California is no exception. In fact, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), about 11,100 California residents aged 12 to 17 used an illicit drug in the past month.
Furthermore, 5,400 were identified, per SAMHSA, to have become dependent on or found to have abused drugs within the past year. And finally, about 4,800 residents aged 12 to 17 were identified to need treatment for drug issues, but weren’t found to be receiving it.
The outlook for alcohol in California follows a similar course. SAMHSA states that 13,000 residents 12 to 17 consumed alcohol in the past month, while 4,200 were found to have abused it or become dependent on the substance within the past year. Finally, about 4,000 adolescents in California were identified as needing to receive treatment for alcohol issues, but currently weren’t receiving any sort of treatment.
Just as many other states around the country have done, California has stepped up its game when it comes to offering treatment programs – or opening dedicated centers – for teens.
Teen Substance Abuse Treatment vs. Adult Treatment
We already covered one of the biggest reasons as to where teen substance abuse treatment differs from that of adults – teens usually don’t seek it willingly – but there are several other notable differences. For instance, drugs and alcohol affect teens differently because they generally have a much lower tolerance than adults.
In teens, the brain is also not completely developed, another differentiating factor that plays a role in the effects of substance abuse. Noting this, in addition to placing a large focus on academics and family for overcoming drugs and alcohol, teens also often respond well to alternative and holistic means of treatment.
