Akron is the fifth-largest city in Ohio, located in Summit County on the western side of the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, south of Lake Erie. Akron’s population as of 2015 was 197,542. The city is part of the larger Akron, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area covering Summit and Portage counties, as well as the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Statistical Area.

Due to its central location along the canal, Akron became and remains a popular manufacturing hub, with diverse economic growth in education, healthcare, and other industries. Akron is also home to the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program, which has helped many persons in addiction recovery in the last several decades.

Drug And Alcohol Abuse And Addiction In Akron And Summit County

Drug abuse, especially opioid abuse, plagues the state of Ohio, and the city of Akron and Summit County are no exceptions. The Ohio Substance Abuse Monitoring Network (OSAM) reported that in 2012 the following drugs remained readily available in the Akron-Canton region:

  • bath salts

  • crack cocaine

  • heroin

  • marijuana

  • methamphetamine

  • prescription opioids

  • prescription stimulants

  • sedative-hypnotics

  • Suboxone

  • synthetic marijuana

From this same report, participants reported that as treatment became more available for opioid abuse and addiction, Suboxone became more available on the streets for misuse.

Suboxone is a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone used to treat opioid addiction. Opioids are dangerous drugs of addiction with high instances of overdose deaths, and abuse of opioid drugs and the medications used to treat abuse of opioids is alarming and often results in adverse effects or overdose.

Despite the staggering instances of drugs available in Akron, there are a number of inpatient addiction treatment centers offering resources for people in need of help.
