About Bethpage

The Substance Abuse Problem in Bethpage

As in every town surrounding New York City, heroin and other opioid pain medications are heavily abused in Bethpage. Oxycodone and other prescription medications are most often the drugs of choice. The DEA has found some pain medications sold on the street altered with the narcotic Fentanyl. Multiple overdoses have occurred as a result of mixing Fentanyl with other medications.

In response to the sharp increase in overdoses, the governor of New York announced a comprehensive plan that added millions of dollars to the state budget, targeted towards drug abuse prevention and treatment. More rehab beds and services became available, as well as funding that was added for treatment for low-income people and pregnant women or women with young children.

Bethpage Adolescent Development Association, Inc. (BADA) is a community-based, chemical dependency treatment center founded in 1971. The agency has become known as PEOPLE, recognizing the need to serve everyone, including adults and families in addition to teens. The program provides services to people involved with substance abuse or whose lives have been negatively impacted by others' use of drugs or alcohol.

Services of PEOPLE include outpatient substance abuse therapy, individual and family counseling, relapse prevention group counseling, and a 12-week substance abuse education program. The PEOPLE center uses the 12-step philosophy to guide its treatment. It also refers clients to hospitals and inpatient treatment as needed.

Major funding comes from a contract with the Nassau County Department of Drug and Alcohol Addiction and the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. Additional grants originate from the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Intergovernmental Affairs, targeted for services to low- and middle-income families and children. Another grant comes from the Town of Oyster Bay's Division for Youth. The center also accepts third-party payments, such as insurance, donations, etc.

PEOPLE Center staff include clinicians specializing in addictions, family, and children's services. They are certified substance abuse counselors and licensed social workers.
