Substance Abuse In Camden And Camden County

Police and firefighters in Camden County are continuing to carry the medication Narcan, which is a life-saving opioid reversal medication that counteracts the effects of an opioid overdose. The number of Narcan administrations nearly tripled between 2016-2017. There were 1,098 Narcan administrations in 2016, and 2,943 in 2017.

Once thought of as a suburban problem, the spike in Narcan administrations in Camden County have many officials suspecting the opioid epidemic is spreading around the state of New Jersey. Officials worry opioid overdoses may be on the rise in urban areas like Camden.

As a way to fight back against the worsening opioid crisis, Camden County has joined other municipalities in suing major drug manufacturers. The goal is to put pressure on pharmaceutical companies to supply adequate warnings on the dangers of opioid use and misuse.
