Miami and southeastern Florida are one of 12 Sentinel Communities located around the U.S. that provide information for the National Drug Early Warning System. Facts include:
- In 2017, 19% of adolescents over age 12 and adults in Miami-Dade County reported binge drinking five or more drinks on one occasion.
- 6% of Miami-Dade County residents, or more than 141,000 people, reported having a substance use disorder in 2017.
- Treatment admissions for alcohol use disorders in the county rose from about 3,200 in 2012 to more than 8,500 in 2017.
- In 2012, about 600 people in Miami-Dade County sought treatment for heroin use disorders, and by 2017, more than 5,000 people were admitted for heroin treatment.
