Outpatient Rehab in North Dakota: The Dark Side of the Oil Boom
As the fourth least populous state in the nation, North Dakota makes up for its lack of population density with its famously healthy economy. Between 2008 and 2014, the Peace Garden State leaped in economic ratings from 19th place to first place because of the oil boom.
But in spite of the incredible GDP per capita ($68,804) and 2.8% unemployment rate, an unflinching drug problem is sweeping the state. As more outsiders come to work in the oil industry, meth and heroin cartels are gradually permeating the small towns and roadways. Of all the Bureau of Crime Investigation drug cases, 38% were traced to meth, and heroin and marijuana numbers are close behind.
Additionally, North Dakota ranks number one for alcohol consumption due to the slow, rural lifestyle most residents lead. As great as it is to be a national leader, North Dakotans are trying to lose this particular title. Rehab centers throughout the state are increasing their attempts to reach addicts before it’s too late, and to rebuild the lives of those affected.
