Outpatient Rehab in Montana Combats Rising Trouble Among Teens in the Treasure State

Averaging fewer than seven humans per square mile, Montana is the fourth-largest state in the nation by area, rightfully earning the nicknames “Big Sky Country” and the “Treasure State.” From geographical wonders like the Triple Divide, the hydrological apex of North America, to the breathtaking Glacier National Park, much of Montana is a cornucopia of virtually untouched wilderness as far as the eye can see.

But amidst all that wide open space lies a darker secret: teen drug addiction. The major culprit is prescription drug abuse, and the statistics are shocking. Montana teens report the third-highest rate of prescription drug abuse in the country, and studies show that prescription drugs are 15 times more deadly than meth, heroin, and cocaine combined.

On the upside, Montana is battling the prescription drug craze. Two projects, The Medicine Abuse Project and the Montana Meth Project, actively campaign to diminish prescription drug abuse, especially in rural areas where the problem is the worst. The groups raise awareness and promote action, including seeking help at rehab centers at the first signs of addiction.
