Oklahoma Dual Diagnosis Rehab Centers

Many Oklahoma residents who struggle with an addiction to drugs or alcohol may have an underlying mental health disorder that they might not even be aware of. When seeking treatment for addiction, it is important to choose a program that will treat all aspects of addiction. A dual diagnosis program may be the answer for people struggling with addiction and mental health disorders.

More than 3.6 million people call Oklahoma home, and close to 147,000 of these individuals are adults who are living with serious mental illness, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Unfortunately, Oklahoma’s public mental health system is inadequate in meeting the needs of its residents. The system provides services to only 22.5 percent of adults who live with serious mental illnesses in the state. This means that many individuals do not receive the care they need for serious mental health concerns.

In Oklahoma, 6,117 adults aged 18 and older (11.5 percent) are currently depressed, according to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. An estimated 6,793 adults aged 18 or older (5.3 percent) are under serious psychological distress, 6,786 adults aged 18 or older (19.9 percent) have been diagnosed with depression at some point in their lifetime, and 6,775 adults aged 18 or older (14.8 percent) have been diagnosed with anxiety at some point in their lifetime. Mental illness is not limited to depression or anxiety. Nationwide, 18.7 percent of individuals living in nursing homes aged 65 to 74 years and 23.5 percent of those aged 85 years or older are diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Mental illness affects Oklahoma residents of all ages, and left untreated, can often co-occur with addiction or increase the risk for substance abuse.

Co-Occurring Disorders: The Need For Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Individuals with mental illness are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, according to research from the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Nearly 8.4 million adults in the United States have both a mental and substance abuse disorder. Individuals with severe mental illness are four times more likely to abuse alcohol and nearly five times more likely to use other drugs at least ten times in their lives.

Some individuals with mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety begin abusing substances as a way to self-medicate and cope with their mental health concerns. Consequently, in order to successfully treat substance abuse, it is critical to also address an individual’s mental health. This is known as “dual diagnosis” for “co-occurring disorders.” Addiction specialists who offer dual diagnosis treatment are specially trained to address both concerns. In most Oklahoma dual diagnosis rehab centers, individualized counseling is the main focus.
