New York Dual Diagnosis Rehab Centers

Substance abuse or addiction is rarely the sole battle facing someone entering rehab. In many cases, alcohol or drug addiction is accompanied by other mental health problems. Learning how mental health issues and substance use affect one another is an important step on the road to recovery.

Prevalence of Mental Health Problems in New York

Depression and anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problems worldwide, and New York is no exception. In 2008, approximately 7.3 percent of New York residents reported that they were currently depressed, with 15.5 percent stating that they had been depressed at some point in their lifetime. Depression is generally characterized by fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleep difficulties, and changes in appetite, which can affect overall motivation and quality of life. Depressive symptoms are also very common among women who recently gave birth, with 12.7 percent of new mothers reporting mood changes or loss of interest in enjoyable activities.

A significant proportion of the New York population also suffers from anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, or agoraphobia. Approximately 12.2 percent of New Yorkers report that they have experienced clinically significant anxiety symptoms in their lifetime. A smaller proportion suffer from severe mental illness such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. These conditions require more intensive monitoring and can make everyday activities difficult.

What Does “Dual Diagnosis” Mean?

Many individuals struggling with addiction are given the label of “dual diagnosis.” Simply put, this means that they have one or more mental health conditions in addition to their alcohol or substance abuse problems. Most commonly, dual diagnosis situations include depression or anxiety disorders. However, substance abuse is high among individuals with severe mental illness.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association, only 7.4 percent of people with dual diagnosis receive treatment for both conditions. Over half receive no treatment for their substance abuse nor their mental health problems. Although dual diagnosis situations require special treatment considerations, a simultaneous approach that targets the substance use as well as mental health conditions is generally thought to be best. Receiving medical interventions such as supervised detoxification as well as psychological help through individual or group therapy is key to a successful recovery.
