2009 saw 1.7 million drug related arrests, the largest category of arrests. The vast majority of these arrests, over 80 percent, were related to drug possession charges. A separate survey found that 326,000 people admitted to illicit drug use in Maryland in the past state alone. There were also 977,000 who admitted to binge drinking alcohol in the past month. What is Court-Ordered Rehab?
Court-ordered rehab is when treatment for a substance abuse problem is mandated or strongly encouraged as part of a sentence or as a condition of release from prison. In Maryland, every defendant will have to discuss the prospect with their lawyer to see if this option will work with their particular case. Generally, treatment is offered as an option for those accused of nonviolent drug related crimes who do not have a list of prior offenses before being arrested. The treatment can be ordered instead of a prison sentence, used to reduce a prison sentence, or as a condition of release on probation, parole, or before the trial begins.
In many jurisdictions patients will have a degree of choice over the type of treatment they go through. There are a variety of approved treatment facilities throughout Maryland, with some offering residential treatment and others offering outpatient counseling. There are also some that use traditional treatment models while others use holistic and alternative treatments.

The Success of Court-Ordered Treatment
Many patients and loved ones are surprised to learn that according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, mandated treatment can be as effective as voluntary treatment. There does not seem to be a correlation between the initiative taken by the patient and the success of rehab. Many patients note the importance of the legal pressure of court ordered rehab on their decision to go through treatment. Patients facing legal consequences for not going through rehab may also be more likely to have higher attendance rates and participate in treatment longer, which can improve their odds at long-term recovery.
