What is Court-Ordered Therapy?
Court-ordered therapy describes a range of situations where a person is obligated to undergo treatment for a substance abuse problem as part of their punishment for their crime. Substance abuse treatment may be use in replacement of prison time or as a condition of a shorter sentence. It can also be used as a condition of a pretrial release, parole, or receiving probation. Generally these options are more readily available for offenders who do not have a long list of prior offenses and committed nonviolent crimes, but every defendant will have to speak with a lawyer to determine their eligibility for receiving court-ordered treatment instead of a traditional sentence.
Most courts will allow the patient to select a treatment center from a list of approved rehabs, giving them flexibility in the type of treatment available. Generally both residential treatment and outpatient treatments are available. Patients can also use more traditional 12-step approaches or holistic approaches depending upon their court’s and the judge’s opinions and options.

How Successful Is Court-Ordered Rehab
