Georgia’s Culture and Addiction Issues
You might assume that most of the problems that hit very urban communities would not exist in the Southern state of Georgia. The truth of Georgia today is quite a bit different than the stereotype of Georgia peaches and coming-out parties. Atlanta is a major hub of economic development in all walks of business life and the state is continually booming with an influx of new citizens from near and far.
Georgia’s youth ranks around the national average in all reported underage drinking parameters, according to the Office of Adolescent Health, except in the case of drinking prior to the age of 13. The national average shows that 20% of children have had their first drink prior to the age of 13, while Georgia’s percentage is 23%. That doesn’t sound like a huge discrepancy, but when you stop to realize that roughly 1 in every 4 Georgia 13-year-olds have already had a drink, that’s a pretty big number. Not to mention Georgia has one of the largest problems with crystal meth and the manufacturing of it. Prescription drugs like painkillers are also becoming an issue with the increase in doctor shopping.
