In January 2018, Marion County made national news when it sued the three biggest distributors of prescription opioids in the country: McKesson Corporation, Cardinal Health 110 LLC, and AmerisourceBergen Drug Corporation.
The lawsuit alleges that the three companies—which together distribute between 85 and 90 percent of the country’s prescription opioids—knowingly flooded the country with huge amounts of opioids and didn’t comply with state and federal law.
While the opioid prescription rate for the United States is listed as 66.5 per 100 persons in the lawsuit, it notes that the rate for Marion County is 115.6 per 100 people. Additionally, 550 South Carolinians lost their lives after overdosing on prescription opioids in 2016.
