Men and women in the military suffer an enormous amount of stress when on active duty and long afterward. This stress can often adversely affects their lives, sometimes leading to substance-abuse problems. Tri-Care allows military personnel to receive civilian health coverage that offers treatment for drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Tri-Care Rehab – For Military Personnel And Veterans

Tri-Care, a health-care program operating under the aegis of the United States Department of Defense Military Health System, secures civilian health-care benefits for military personnel and retirees, as well as their dependents. Both types of Tri-Care insurance – Tri-Care Standard and Tri-Care Extra – offer coverage for drug/alcohol rehabilitation.

Our military heroes and their families deserve the opportunity Tri-Care affords them to get the help and treatment they need.

Tri-Care Drug Rehab Coverage

Tri-Care covers a maximum of three benefit periods in a recipient’s lifetime (beginning with the commencement date of the covered treatment and ending 365 days later) for substance-abuse treatment. Tri-Care covers most treatment options, including detoxification, rehabilitation, and some outpatient therapy. However, the following conditions and stipulations apply:

  • Detox
    • Treatment requires prior authorization by the regional contractor.
    • A benefit period does not include hospital services, either emergency or inpatient, for detox/stabilization and substance-abuse-related medical complications.
    • When a patient’s condition requires hospital services, then the emergency and inpatient services are deemed medically necessary.
  • Rehab
    • Treatment requires prior authorization by the regional contractor.
    • Rehab services are counted in 35-day and 45-day limits associated with acute inpatient psychiatric care.
    • The 365-day benefit period applies regardless of the total treatment services rendered during that period.
  • Outpatient
    • Again, treatment requires prior authorization by the regional contractor.
    • The 365-day benefit period still applies regardless of the total treatment services rendered during that period.
    • For outpatient group therapy, Tri-Care allows 60 sessions per benefit period.
    • Tri-Care covers 15 sessions of outpatient family therapy for each benefit period.

Benefits of Tri-Care Drug Rehab

Not all treatment facilities accept Tri-Care, but the upside is that Tri-Care has a fairly extensive network of providers. These providers can help clients wade through the tangle of paperwork and make sure they understand the level and extent of treatment that will be covered. Further, some Tri-Care plans have higher co-pays than others, and patients should be aware of this early on.

Tri-Care providers – especially those in areas with large military populations, which is often the case – are also knowledgeable about the special needs and circumstances of military personnel with substance-abuse issues. Some fall into addiction as a result of stress, either job-related or post-traumatic. Others become accidental addicts as a result of using prescribed medications, often injury-related pain medications. Whatever the cause of addiction, it helps to have rehabilitation professionals who understand.

If you’re active military or a veteran, you’ve earned the right to get the help you need for a substance-abuse problem. Contact us today for free information about Tri-Care and available treatment options.
