Health insurance can help take the financial burden off of the decision to seek treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction. Several health insurance companies, including Community Health Choice, provide some form of coverage for addiction treatment.
If you are considering seeking treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction, you may be concerned about how you will pay for a rehab program. In fact, the cost of treatment is one of the primary reasons people opt out of getting the help they need to overcome addiction.
Luckily, several insurance companies provide some form of coverage for addiction treatment. One of these companies is Community Health Choice. Community Health Choice is a non-profit insurance company based in Texas. Community is a Managed Care Organization (MCO) that offers both children’s Medicaid and CHIP programs.
This insurance company also offers health benefits through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Community has a network that consists of more than 77 hospitals and 10,000 doctors.
Before seeking addiction treatment, it’s important that you understand the benefits that your Community Health Choice plan offers. Several Community plans pay at least some portion of the cost of addiction services.
Does Community Health Choice Cover Addiction Services?
Thanks to the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, insurance companies are required to provide equal coverage for mental health addiction services as they would other medical services. This means that if your insurance plan covers regular medical treatment, addiction treatment should also be covered to some degree.
In general, many Community Health Choice insurance plans provide some form of coverage for drug and alcohol addiction treatment. However, because Community is a non-profit company, treatment may only be covered when received at certain facilities.
There are several questions you can ask your Community representative to better understand your plan and what it has to offer. In relation to addiction treatment, these questions may include:
- Does my plan cover inpatient treatment?
- What length of stay in an inpatient treatment facility is covered?
- Which rehab facilities in my area accept Community Health Choice insurance?
- Are outpatient programs covered by my plan?
- What is my copay/deductible for addiction treatment?
- Do any addiction services require prior authorization?
- Are medications for addiction treatment covered under my plan?
- Are there any addiction services that aren’t covered by my plan?
- What will my out-of-pocket costs be?
Common Addiction Services That May Be Covered By Community Health Choice
There are a variety of options when it comes to seeking treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction. The treatment you should pursue will depend on your unique condition and needs. For example, one person may only need weekly therapy to successfully overcome addiction, whereas someone else may require a month-long stay at an inpatient facility.

Addiction services that are covered under most insurance plans include intervention programs, detoxification programs, and therapy. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and services like drug testing may also be covered.
Your Community Health Choice plan may also provide some level of coverage for more intensive addiction programs. These include inpatient and outpatient treatment.
Outpatient Addiction Treatment —
People seeking treatment for a substance use disorder for the first time are often recommended beginning with outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs provide structured yet flexible plans of recovery that allow people to continue work or school while receiving treatment.
Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are the most intensive form of outpatient treatment. Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are a level down in intensity compared to PHPs. IOPs require patients to attend therapy several times a week for four to eight hours total. Standard outpatient programs are the least intensive and often consist of therapy once or twice a week.
Inpatient Addiction Treatment —
Inpatient treatment for drug or alcohol addiction is the most intensive type of treatment available. Inpatient programs are residentially-based and typically last anywhere from 30 to 60 days or longer. Many rehab facilities provide treatment programs that are catered to each person’s needs and specific condition.
Community Health Choice insurance plans typically provide at least partial coverage for outpatient and inpatient programs. Coverage will depend on the type of plan you have as well as whether the treatment facility is within Community’s network.
How To Use Your Community Health Choice Plan To Cover Addiction Treatment
Fully understanding your Community Health Choice plan is an important step in getting the help you need to recover from addiction. There are several factors to consider when using your Community insurance to cover addiction treatment.
To begin, speaking with a Community representative can help you better understand the coverage you are eligible for. A representative can also let you know which services are covered and to what extent. He or she can also inform you of any out-of-pocket costs you may be responsible for.
Additionally, knowing which addiction services you need is important as well. A treatment representative can give you a better idea of which types of treatment are best for your specific needs.
