For patients struggling with substance abuse, as well as their families, the costs associated with the recovery process can seem daunting. Fortunately, Aetna offers a variety of coverage plans to help individuals ease the burden of paying for addiction treatment themselves.
For many people, recovery will mean more than just going through a short-term rehab for a few days. Even if the intensive treatment only lasts a little while, there are also other considerations such as aftercare, continued therapy and sometimes medications. Many patients also find themselves needing longer inpatient care, detox periods or holistic therapies to help them heal entirely. All of these various parts of treatment carry a price, and loved ones often watch it quickly begin to add up.
Fortunately, since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, qualifying insurance plans must include some kind of treatment for those looking to recover from substance abuse problems. This can be extremely helpful in reducing the financial stress and struggles for patients and their loved ones. Each plan is different, however, in the amount of coverage it offers and the types of treatment allowed. Patients must familiarize themselves with what is available under their precise plan so they can make wise decisions about where to pursue treatment to minimize their personal financial cost.

Aetna Substance Abuse Coverage in Florida
In Florida, there are four levels of plans available for patients from Aetna: Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Catastrophic. Each of these plans has differences with regards to what they cover and the rates that are billed to the families versus the insurance provider. The higher the plan is ranked, the higher the premiums will be, but the lower the deductibles will be.
Understanding the Current Aetna Plans
For the Florida plans currently offered by Aetna, there is a requirement to see a specialist. While this does force patients to take a few extra steps, such as finding a primary care provider and receiving the needed referral, this can serve as an additional resource for those willing to leverage it. There are a number of different types of treatments and therapies available. The doctor can help patients identify the top practitioners and build a recovery team of specialists who can help them reach their goals.
It is also worth noting that the current Aetna plans do not cover treatment given by out-of-network providers (excluding medical emergencies). This means you will have to narrow your list for ideal practitioners by the ones included in the Aetna network. This can help you make a decision faster.
Aetna also limits the types of alternative treatment it will cover. The plans indicate that they do not include coverage for acupuncture except as anesthesia, but they may cover certain chiropractic care. If you and your providers believe that certain forms of alternative or holistic treatments will help you improve your overall health, it is worth speaking with an insurance representative to see if you can obtain coverage.
The Levels of Aetna Plans
Gold
The Gold level plans will have the highest premiums, and these will vary from person to person. You will also have a deductible for network care. There may also be a separate deductible for prescription drugs, depending upon the plan. This separate deductible should be noted as it is not uncommon for rehab patients to need medications. Medications can help patients successfully detox, maintain sobriety and cope with co-occurring disorders, such as depression.
Silver
The Silver level plans currently offered by Aetna have a higher deductible than the Gold level plans. These plans do not list a separate deductible for particular services, such as prescription drugs, however.
Bronze
At the Bronze level, the deductibles and out-of-pocket limit will again increase compared to the previous two levels. Like the Silver level Plan, however, there is no additional deductible for prescription drugs.
Catastrophic
The available Catastrophic level plan will have deductibles that are the same or higher than the Bronze level plans. This plan also does not have additional deductibles for particular services, such as medications.
For patients interested in pursuing substance abuse treatment, finding a way to pay for the care can seem troublesome. Fortunately, with a good insurance plan, patients and their loved ones can find their costs minimized. Those with Aetna in Florida should review the above information to begin to understand their own options. All patients should speak with an insurance representative before making any medical decisions to ensure coverage.
