Substance Abuse In Elizabeth

A U.S. Senator visited the city of Elizabeth in early March 2018 to meet first hand with staff and counselors at a treatment center. The Senator helped pass a federal budget agreement in D.C., which gives $6 billion to help fund treatment, prevention, and recovery programs for opioid addiction.

Over 2,200 people died in New Jersey in 2016, and Union County saw an over 40% jump in death rates from 2015-2016. Early data also suggests nearly 2,300 people died from opioid related overdoses between July 2016 and July 2017, up 35% from the previous. The hope is more federal funding can provide education and resources to help prevent opioid use.
