Kansas Dual Diagnosis Rehab Centers

Many Kansas individuals who struggle to overcome addiction may also have an underlying mental health condition that they may or may not be aware of. For these individuals, it is best to seek out a dual-diagnosis rehab center. Fortunately, the state of Kansas offers a variety of dual-diagnosis programs for individuals in need.

When an individual experiences both a problem with substance abuse and, at the same time, a mental illness, the condition is known as dual diagnosis — and it’s more common than you may think. Also known as comorbidity, six out of ten people who have problems with drug or alcohol abuse also have mental illness, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse or NIDA.

Statistics from the Partnership at Drugfree.org indicate that 10 percent of Americans over age 12 — or 23.5 million people — struggle with substance abuse issues; nationwide, about 25 percent of adults have a diagnosed mental health disorder and of these, almost half — 45 percent — have a dual diagnoses, says the National Institutes of Mental Health.

Why Do Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Co-Occur?

The relationship between the two issues is complicated; even if one issue arose first, it’s difficult to point to mental illness as a cause of substance abuse and vice versa. NIDA suggests that mental health issues and substance abuse may be linked in the following ways:

  • Genes may predispose some people to substance abuse, mental illness or both
  • Many people with dual diagnosis have experienced similar environmental triggers, such as abuse, trauma, stress and exposure to drugs at a young age
  • Substance use and some types of mental illness affect the same regions of the brain
  • Early exposure to drugs may increase risk of mental illness later in life, just as early development of mental illness may increase risk of addiction later in life

In addition, certain groups have a higher risk of dual diagnosis, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness and NIDA. These risk factors include:

  • Mentally ill males, low socio-economic-status individuals, veterans and those with other medical issues have a higher risk of abusing alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, opiates, and stimulants
  • Individuals diagnosed with anxiety or mood disorders are twice as likely to experience drug addiction
  • Sixty-seven percent of those diagnosed with bipolar disorder have a dual diagnosis; that’s five times the rate of the general population
  • Forty-seven percent of schizophrenics have a dual diagnosis; four times the rate of the general population

Though the relationship between mental illness and addiction is complex and not fully understood, one thing is certain: A successful recovery requires treatment for both disorders.
