Wisconsin Drug Detox Centers

The number of drug overdose deaths in Wisconsin has doubled in the last decade, and the state now has the 34th highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States. This increase in drug overdose deaths is due in part to a sharp increase in prescription drug abuse, according to a new report released by the Trust for America’s Health (TFAH). Today, prescription drug abuse is a top public health concern that’s responsible for more overdose deaths than cocaine and heroin combined.

Wisconsin has taken several important steps to curb the increase in prescription drug abuse. This includes putting in place an active Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP). The state’s “anti-doctor shopping” laws are designed to make it more difficult for individuals to obtain multiple prescriptions from different doctors. Patients are prohibited from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare providers. The state’s physical exam requirement also requires health care providers to physically examine patients prior to writing a prescription, or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship. Finally, under the state’s Medicaid plan, the state can require individuals who are suspected of misusing controlled substances to use a single prescriber and pharmacy. While not currently in place, Wisconsin could benefit from prescriber education laws that help healthcare providers better identify individuals struggling with prescription drug abuse.

Medically-supervised drug detox is an essential step towards long-term sobriety success. Withdrawal symptoms from prescription painkillers like Xanax, cocaine, heroin and other substances can be extremely difficult to manage without professional assistance. These symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tremors and seizures. Individuals may also experience difficult emotional withdrawal symptoms, including stress, anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts. Medical drug detox helps individuals safely manage these symptoms and take the first important step towards long-term sobriety.
