Virginia Drug Detox Centers

In the state of Virginia, prescription painkillers now cause more deaths than illicit street drugs. Fortunately for Virginia residents, the state offers several drug detoxification centers to ensure that individuals safely come off the effects of drugs and go on to live a life of sobriety.

Virginia has the fourth lowest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States, according to the new report, Prescription Drug Abuse: Strategies to Stop the Epidemic. Despite this low overdose rate, the number of Virginia drug overdose deaths still increased by 36 percent since 1999. This increase in overdose deaths is due primarily to the increased abuse of prescription painkillers.

Prescription painkillers are a top public health concern; prescription painkiller overdose deaths now cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined. The misuse and abuse of prescription drugs now costs an estimated $5 billion a year in lost productivity, medical costs, and criminal justice costs.

Virginia is taking several important steps to address the growing prescription drug epidemic. The state has an active Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and laws to crack down on “doctor shopping”, a common practice used to obtain multiple prescriptions. These laws prohibit patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare provider.

Virginia’s physical exam requirement also requires healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship before prescribing a controlled substance. The state also recommends prescriber education to help prescribers better understand how medications can be misused and to identify patients in need of treatment. With new drugs like Zohydro about to hit the market, there is a new problem than the standard drugs like Xanax, Valium, and Oxycodone that require detox.

Virginia also permits a pharmacist to require an ID prior to dispensing a controlled substance. The state’s lock-in programs can require individuals suspected of misusing controlled substances to use a single prescriber and pharmacy.
