Ohio has the 12th highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States. Even more shocking, the number of drug overdose deaths, the majority of which are from prescription drugs, tripled in the last decade. Prescription drug abuse is not just a serious problem; it’s reach is at ‘epidemic’ levels throughout the United States, according to a new report, Prescription Drug Abuse: Strategies to Stop the Epidemic. Today, more Americans will die from prescription drug overdoses than from cocaine and heroin overdoses combined.
Ohio is taking several important steps to help stop prescription drug abuse. The state requires mandatory utilization by prescribers of its Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. Prescriber education regarding the dangers of prescription drug abuse and the warning symptoms of abuse is also required or recommended.
Ohio is also working to combat “doctor shopping” by prohibiting patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare provider. The state requires healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship before prescribing a controlled substance. Finally, under the state’s Medicaid plan, the pharmacy lock-in program requires individuals suspected of misusing controlled substances to use a single prescriber and pharmacy.
