Nebraska Drug Detox Centers

While Nebraska may have the third lowest drug overdose rate in the United States, the number of drug overdose deaths have doubled in the past decade. This increase in overdose deaths is due in part to prescription drug abuse. Fortunately, Nebraska has a number of detoxification centers available to help individuals safely stop the use of drugs or alcohol and get on the path to sobriety.

Prescription drug abuse is a major problem in Nebraska and throughout the United States. More individuals die from prescription drug overdoses than from heroin and cocaine combined, according to a new report released from the Trust for America’s Health.

Nebraska is taking several important steps to curb prescription drug abuse, although there is room for the state to do more. While the state does have a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) in pace, it has yet to require mandatory utilization by prescribers. The state does have doctor shopping laws in place that prohibit patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare providers.

However, Nebraska does not have a physical exam requirement in place, which would require healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship before prescribing a controlled substance. Nebraska has passed a pharmacy lock-in program under the state’s Medicare plan, which requires individuals suspected of misusing controlled substances to use a single provider and pharmacy.

Drug Detox is Essential for Long-term Sobriety & Treatment Success

Managing withdrawal symptoms from substance abuse can be extremely difficult; these symptoms alone cannot be overcome through sheer “willpower”. In fact, abruptly stopping the use of drugs can put the body at risk for serious health problems. This is why medically supervised detox is such a critical first step in the path to long-term sobriety.

Drug detox is essential to handling difficult withdrawal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle tension, heart palpitations, tremor, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest and seizure. Experienced addiction specialists can also help with the emotional withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, restlessness, irritability, depression, and thoughts of suicide.
