Missouri Drug Detox Centers

Missouri has faced high rates of substance abuse related overdoses in the past few years. In order to combat these alarming statistics, the state of Missouri has a variety of drug detox centers available to help individuals safely stop the use of drugs or alcohol.

Missouri has the seventh highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States. The number of drug overdose deaths in Missouri has more than tripled since 1999 due in part to widespread prescription drug abuse. Nationwide, the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs result in more overdose that cocaine and heroin combined. Unfortunately, only one in 10 Americans with a substance abuse disorder receives treatment, according to a new report released by the Trust for America’s Future.

The state’s high overdose mortality rate is not helped by the fact that Missouri lacks many basic measures to curb prescription drug abuse. For example, Missouri is the only state without a prescription drug monitoring program in place. The state also did not participate in Medicare Expansion, which would have expanded coverage of substance abuse services and treatment.

Missouri has, however, passed a drug shopping law that prohibits patients from withholding information about prior prescriptions from their healthcare provider. The state also requires healthcare providers to physically examine patients or have a bona fide patient-physician relationship in place before prescribing a controlled substance. Finally, Missouri’s lock-in program requires Medicaid recipients who are suspected of misusing controlled substances to use a single prescriber and pharmacy, cracking down on doctor shopping.

Medically-Supervised Drug Detox is First Step To Sobriety

Drug detox is an essential first step towards long-term sobriety. Detoxing from drugs, including prescription painkillers, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamines, is extremely difficult due to withdrawal symptoms.

These withdrawal symptoms include:

  • sensitivity to light
  • dilated pupils
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • severe itching
  • fever
  • sweating
  • chills
  • tremors
  • tachycardia (fast heartbeat)
  • joint aches and pains
  • elevated pain sensitivity
  • possible cardiac failure

Cognitive withdrawal symptoms include feelings of depression, prolonged insomnia, auditory and visual hallucinations, anxiety, paranoia and an increased risk for suicide.
