The state of Wyoming offers a variety of court-ordered drug and alcohol rehab programs for individuals who have been caught committing a drug-related crime.

Drug and alcohol abuse is a serious problem for many people in Wyoming. According to the most recent report from The National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 48,000 people in Wyoming report past year depended or abuse of drugs or alcohol. These are serious numbers that point to the need for treatment facilities throughout the state.

One of the reasons that drug and alcohol abuse is so dangerous in Wyoming is because of the link between substance abuse and crimes. Sadly, people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol are more likely to commit crimes than those who are not, because the influence of the illicit substance can hamper an individual’s judgment. According to the Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring program and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 36 percent of those admitting to past year dependence on an illicit drug had two or more arrests on their record. People who are arrested for a drug or alcohol related crime are often asked by the courts to attend alcohol or drug abuse counseling to help them overcome their addiction.

Understanding Court-Ordered Treatment

Court-ordered drug or alcohol abuse counseling programs feature proven strategies that help individuals learn how to live life free from addiction. These programs may be required in order for the individual to avoid jail time, achieve parole or get a pretrial release, depending on the particular details of the crime committed. These treatments may include detox and counseling, depending on the severity of the person’s addiction.

Court-ordered drug and alcohol treatment has, historically, been as effective if not more effective than programs an individual undergoes without the legal requirement. The accountability provided by the courts leads to higher attendance rates, while the pressure of the courts helps ensure the individual is motivated to succeed. Treatments that are mandated, whether by courts or by the individual’s family, tend to lead to a positive treatment outcome in the majority of cases.
