Alabama Affordable Healthcare Insurance Coverage

An individual’s struggles with drugs and alcohol are not geographical issues – but nationwide issues. And the consequences of being challenged with such issues can be devastating to an individual and their friends and family. That’s why not just receiving treatment – but receiving the proper treatment – is so important, as it can get individuals back on the path to a healthy life and prevent them from continuing the downward spiral that they’re likely to be on. But when it comes to proper treatment, no two individuals are the same. However, while some may be able to overcome issues by simply going cold turkey or receiving outpatient therapy, most individuals need more intensive therapy, such as the therapy and treatment that is offered in an inpatient facility.

Inpatient treatment centers require individuals to check in to a rehabilitation center for 30, 60, 90 or up to 120 days, where they’re then privy to around-the-clock treatment and withdrawal symptoms management, in addition to group and individual therapy, as well as alternative types of therapy such as equine therapy, holistic treatment, wilderness therapy and art therapy, among other possibilities.

But one big difference between inpatient therapy and other types of therapies is that the former, due to its intensive nature, is often more costly. And it is this comparatively higher cost that can actually be a prohibiting factor from people receiving the help that they truly need. That’s why a good healthcare plan is so important, not just for covering medical expenses, but for covering other situations such as rehabilitative treatment. Thankfully, for those who aren’t eligible for healthcare through their employer, the Affordable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”) offers a variety of plan options that cover inpatient rehabilitative treatment – at least to some extent. This post will take a look at some of the Affordable Care Act options that are offered to residents of Alabama.

The Affordable Care Act in Alabama: The Basics

The two main health insurance providers that offer plans as part of the Affordable Care Act to residents of Alabama are Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama and UnitedHealthcare of Alabama, Inc. Both providers offer a variety of plans, which are categorized by coverage into categories like gold, silver, bronze and catastrophic. Gold category plans offer the most coverage, yet they have higher annual premiums compared to silver and bronze level plans, which have higher deductibles, but lesser overall coverage and a lesser monthly premium. No matter what type of plan an individual were to choose, all of them cover inpatient rehabilitative treatment – at least to some extent. We’ll get into plan specifics in the next section.

Obamacare in Alabama: Plan Options

We already told you about the healthcare providers as it pertains to Obamacare in Alabama, as well as the plan types. But it’s worth noting that while all the plans cover inpatient treatment in some way, the coverage varies based on plan type in many cases. For example, a Blue Cross Blue Shield gold plan covers inpatient treatment 100 percent after the deductible is met, just so long as the patient chooses an in network provider. Furthermore, the plan has low deductibles – an individual annual deductible of $750 and family deductible of $1,500. If the patient were to choose an out of network provider, nothing is covered. A Blue Cross Blue Shield bronze plan covers inpatient treatment at 0 percent co-insurance, but comes with a more expensive deductible at $6,850 for individuals and $13,700 for the family.

A UnitedHealthcare of Alabama gold plan covers inpatient treatment at 20 percent co-insurance after the deductible is met. It’s also worth noting that for coverage to qualify, there needs to be a referral to such a venue. The same is true of the UnitedHealthcare bronze level plan in terms of coverage for inpatient treatment services. UnitedHealthcare gold plans carry deductibles that are a little more expensive than Blue Cross Blue Shield ones, however. The individual deductible is $1,000 and family deductible is $2,000.
